Romancing The Divine

by Geeta Samuel

As enthralling as they are entertaining, the tales of whirling dervishes make for a grand spectacle. Performed by the followers of Mevlana Rumi, this is a Sufi tradition that transcends the boundaries of entertainment and performance to form an experience that’s both timeless and spiritual. To soothing Sufi rhythms, the dervishes, attired in white robes, spin around in a trance, beautifully capturing the moment in time. Tanoura dancers performed at the engagement of the son of Dubai-based Jewellery tycoon Ramesh Ramani at the Sheraton Hua Hin Resort and Spa in Hua Hin, Thailand.

Tanoura means skirt in English and is usually performed by Sufi men to the tune of Sufi music, where they spin continuously. The performance, in itself is a celebration of eternal love, which tops the entertainment list at a luxury wedding.
